In his article, “Elizabeth Philips produces the most gentle of novels,” Bill Robertson discusses a new kind of plot for which The Afterlife of Birds is a “perfect example”; a plot that does not focus on (as Jack Hodgins describes it), “heroic quests and individual triumphs,” but rather the “journey inward.”
