Graveyard Shift at the Lemonade Stand, Tim Bowling’s dramatic debut of short fiction, zeroes in on complex moral issues and moments of transformation. In an age that often seems dark and discouraging, these stories, equal parts lemon and sugar, ask what it means to live with a sense of personal vision and integrity. Here, children question their parents and other adults, artists query their culture, the living examine the dead, and animals confront the meaning and purpose of the human species. Employing a language at once lyrical and cutting, and a tone that veers from the comic to the tragic, Bowling has drawn on his 35-year career as a storyteller to produce his most varied and compelling work yet.
The author of twenty-four other works of poetry and prose, and a recipient of many honours (including five Alberta Book Awards and a Guggenheim Fellowship), Tim Bowling grew up at the mouth of the Fraser River and now lives close to the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. Graveyard Shift at the Lemonade Stand is his first collection of short stories.
