Maurice Mierau wins the Kobzar Award
Congratulations to Maurice Mierau, whose book, Detachment: An Adoption Memoir, has won the 2016 Kobzar Literary Award, which is given a book with a Ukrainian-Canadian theme. The award was presented at a ceremony in Toronto on March 2, 2016, and is worth $25,000.
The other shortlisted books were: The Delusionist by Grant Buday; The Showman and the Ukrainian Cause: Folk Dance, Film and the Life of Vasile Avramenko, by Orest T. Martynowych; Underground Soldier by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch; and According to Baba: A Collaborative Oral History of Sudbury’s Ukrainian Community by Stacey Zembrzycki. The jury (Karen Connelly, Tamas Dobozy and Shandi Mitchell) said they were were “inspired by the many literary works, histories, life stories, and documentaries that were entered for the prize and grateful for the insights they offered into a cultural and historical tradition that were not necessarily our own.”
