Ruth Dempsey: What do you hope people will take away from your book?
Brian Orend: People with chronic conditions are, in general, less happy than those without. The average person, when asked to rank their overall life happiness on a scale of one to 10 will answer somewhere in the sevens, whereas those with chronic conditions will on average report somewhere in the six range. In other words, affliction is a substantial drag on human well-being.
Yet this drag should be resisted and, hopefully, overcome. Those with chronic conditions want to be happier. I hope my book will provide practical support and inspiration to those facing difficult conditions.
